About Us
Matt and I are the heart and soul of Petal and Stem Farm. Over the last two years, we have been working tirelessly to combine our mutual passion for farming and gardening into what we hope will blossom into a thriving business.
I began Petal and Stem in 2020, inspired by my father, who grew up on a small farm in Rhode Island. I was fortunate to have a small piece of land where I sowed my first seeds and began my cut flower business. However, clay soil, lack of nutrients, and poor drainage provided unique challenges. Challenges are just part of farming, and through continual amendments to the land and improvising with raised beds, I am still growing in the very soil that started it all.
I met Matt in the spring of 2023. With the pickup line, “I could use a handyman,” our lives would be forever changed. Not only is Matt a full-time carpenter and handyman, but he is also now a farmhand.
Matt has been gardening since he was 10 years old. At a young age, he was inspired by his great-grandmother, grandfather, and parents, who all shared a passion for gardening and self-sufficiency. Some of his earliest memories are of watching his grandfather plant seedlings in a small makeshift greenhouse he constructed himself. As a young teenager, Matt had a small vegetable stand where neighbors would visit to purchase the vegetables he grew himself.
At Petal and Stem, Matt and I are busy balancing our full-time jobs while working hard on nights and weekends tending to our thousands of flowers and vegetable plants. Every flower on the farm—from the time the seed or tuber is planted to when the blooms are harvested and the dahlia tubers are dug, divided, and packed away for winter storage—is touched and cared for by our two sets of hands.
Over the last year, and this coming season, we are shifting our focus to growing primarily dahlias. We thank both our new and existing customers for your continued support and hope you will follow along as we plant our way toward our dreams, one tuber at a time.
With Love,
Jamie & Matt 🤍
